  • What is Forging?
? What is Forging?     ♦️ Forging is a metal working process, by which the metal or alloy is plastically deformed with the help of hammer, press etc, to get desired shape and size and to obtained desired mechanical properties such as Impact strength, creep, fatigue, toughness etc.   ? TYPES OF FORGING   1️⃣ According to arrangement of die, Forging is classified as open die forging and closed die forging.   2️⃣ According to the temperature of workpiece, forging is classified as Hot forging, cold forging, warm forging.   3️⃣ According to the forging equipment, forging is classified as hammer forging and press forging.   ? TYPES OF FORGING   1️⃣ Open Die Forging (Free Forging)   ? Used for large and simple-shaped components.   ♦️ Involves hammering or pressing metal between flat or shaped dies.   ♨️ Example :- Large crankshafts, axle beams.   2️⃣ Closed Die Forging (Impression Die Forging)   ? Metal is compressed between shaped dies, forming complex shapes.   ♦️ More precise than open-die forging.   ♨️ Example :- Connecting rods, gears, camshafts.   3️⃣ Cold Forging   ? Done at room temperature, reducing material waste.   ♦️ Produces high surface finish and dimensional accuracy.   ♨️ Example :- Fasteners, shafts, ball joints.   4️⃣ Hot Forging   ? Metal is heated above recrystallization temperature.   ♦️ Improves ductility and reduces hardness for easy shaping.   ♨️ Example : Engine components, suspension parts.   5️⃣ Warm Forging   ? Performed at intermediate temperatures (between cold and hot forging).   ♦️ Balances strength and precision.   ♨️ Example :Transmission gears, bearing races.   6️⃣ Roll Forging   ♦️ Involves rolling a heated bar between two dies to reduce thickness and increase length.   ♨️ Example :- Axles, steering columns.   7️⃣ Press Forging   ? Uses hydraulic or mechanical presses to apply continuous pressure.   ♦️ Provides better control over material flow.   ♨️ Example :- Chassis parts, large structural components.   8️⃣ Net Shape / Near Net Shape Forging   ♦️ A precision forging process that minimizes the need for subsequent machining.   9️⃣ Isothermal Forging   ♦️ A hot forging process where the die is heated to or slightly below the workpiece temperature to minimize heat loss.   ? Each type of forging is used based on the strength, weight, and precision requirements of automobile components.
